In the middle of a rainy Michigan night, 88-year-old Dian Wurdock walked out the front door of her son's home in Grand Rapids, barefoot and coatless. Her destination was unknown even to herself.
Humans and animals are made up of trillions of cells, and each cell contains DNA specific to that individual. Therefore, identifying DNA that causes genetic disorders gives researchers and clinicians a better understanding of how to treat inherited diseases and possibly prevent the diseases from being passed down to future generations.
Two major genetic studies of autism, led in part by UC San Francisco scientists and involving more than 50 laboratories worldwide, have newly implicated dozens of genes in the disorder. The research shows that rare mutations in these genes affect communication networks in the brain and compromise fundamental biological mechanisms that govern whether, when, and how genes are activated overall.
Alere Health, LLC, a leading provider of personal health support solutions to employers and health plans, announced today that it will introduce its new global logo and brand identity at AHIP's Institute 2010 in Las Vegas, June 9-11.
