When monitoring Parkinson's disease, SPECT imaging of the brain is used for acquiring information on the dopamine activity. A new study conducted in Turku, Finland, shows that the dopamine activity observed in SPECT imaging does not reflect the number of dopamine neurons in the substantia nigra, as previously assumed.
Internationally renowned brain surgeon Hrayr Shahinian, M.D., a pioneer in minimally invasive brain surgery, has announced that he is teaming with scientists and technologists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., to design the next generation of high-tech surgical instruments - technology that also will be useful for planetary exploration.
In his new nonfiction book, "Coping Successfully with Changing Tides and Winds: A Neurosurgeon's Compass" (published by iUniverse), author Dr. Jack Kushner recounts his impressive autobiography as a doctor and financial expert while also recommending some time-proven counsel for surviving as well as succeeding in this rapidly changing economy.
"I'd like to pose the question: what more must we do to ensure the health, nutritional, and educational needs of all seven billion are met?" Scott Radloff, director of USAID's Office of Population and Reproductive Health, writes about World Population Day on the agency's "IMPACTblog."
Myriad Genetics, Inc. today announced that Judge Robert W. Sweet of the Federal District Court for the Southern District of New York ruled that certain claims covering isolated DNA sequences in seven of the 23 patents covering BRACAnalysis® are invalid. Myriad will appeal the decision to the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and will continue to vigorously defend this litigation.
