Los Angeles County filed suit Tuesday to remove from the ballot a measure that would strip the city of Los Angeles from the county health department's jurisdiction and require the city to create its own department. The suit argues that the ballot measure, set to appear before voters in June, is invalid because it seeks to take away administrative decision-making authority that is the purview of the county and the city, and that it is preempted by state law (Mehta, 10/1).

fMRI scans can identify biological signs of autism in toddlers

The biological causes of autism are still not understood. A diagnosis of autism is only possible after ages three or four and the tests are subjective, based on behavioral symptoms. Now, in research that appeared in Neuron, scientists at the Weizmann Institute of Science, Carnegie Mellon University, and the University of California, San Diego have found, for the first time, a method that can accurately identify a biological sign of autism in very young toddlers.

Scientists identify 'Achilles heel' of anaplastic large-cell lymphomas

Anaplastic large-cell lymphomas are rare cancers of the white blood cells. New research from the international ERIA consortium, led by scientists in Vienna, has now shown that the same signaling pathway is essential to the growth of cancer cells in various forms of ALCL: TYK2 (tyrosine kinase 2, an important component of the immune system) prevents apoptotic cell death by increasing the production of Mcl1, a special type of protein belonging to the BCL2 family.
