Genzyme ranked third on the global list for best employers

Genzyme Corporation announced today that scientists have again named the company a top employer in a survey ranking the reputations of biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies. Genzyme is ranked third on the global list of 575 companies, the second consecutive year it has achieved this position. Genzyme placed among the top 10 of all biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies in the world for the seventh year in a row.

Supercomputer used to determine structures and functions of proteins

Scientists at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory are proposing to use a supercomputer originally developed to simulate elementary particles in high-energy physics to help determine the structures and functions of proteins, including, for example, the 30,000 or so proteins encoded by the human genome. Structural information will help scientists better understand proteins' role in disease and health, and may lead to new diagnostic and therapeutic agents.

Jefferson scientists receive grant to study genetics of platelet gene expression

Scientists at Jefferson Medical College have received a four-year, $3 million National Institutes of Health grant funded by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute to study variations of platelet function, specifically, the genetics of platelet gene expression. The study aims to find data that can be translated into novel therapeutic strategies and develop better predictors of cardiovascular disease.

An international team of researchers has identified the first gene associated with Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS), a common sleep disorder affecting tens of millions of people worldwide.

New dimension discovered in body clock rhythm

Research on what makes the body clock tick has led Dr Michael Hastings of the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge to discover a new and unanticipated cog in the human body clock. A patent for the compound involved has been filed by MRC Technology. The results, published in Science, could lead to therapies for people whose sleep is disrupted by shift work or old age.
