New data presented today at the International Liver CongressTM 2011, the 46th Annual Meeting of the European Association for the Study of the Liver, in Berlin, highlighted the efficacy of Boehringer Ingelheim's once-daily oral protease inhibitor BI 201335, in both treatment-naïve and -experienced patients with chronic genotype-1 hepatitis C virus infection. Genotype-1 HCV is the most challenging genotype of HCV to treat.

China, WHO to collaborate on flu research center

Chinese and WHO officials last week agreed to open a flu research center in Beijing, Bloomberg reports. "The new collaborating center for reference and research on influenza will join a network of WHO-affiliated labs in Atlanta, London, Tokyo and Melbourne that monitor flu strains and make recommendations on vaccines to fight the virus," the news service writes

Mouse models of Zika virus infection in pregnancy provide basis to develop vaccines, treatments

Two mouse models of Zika virus infection in pregnancy have been developed by a team of researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. In them, the virus migrated from the pregnant mouse's bloodstream into the placenta, where it multiplied, then spread into the fetal circulation and infected the brains of the developing pups.
