Researchers link novel mutated gene to mental retardation and imbalance syndrome

Researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine have identified a genetic cause for a form of pediatric brain malformation involving the cerebellum.

Bio-Reference Laboratories second-quarter revenues up 27% to $110,447,000

Bio-Reference Laboratories, Inc. (Numbers in Thousands Except Per Share Data or where otherwise noted) released its second quarter, fiscal year 2010 earnings today for the three months ending April 30. The Company recorded current quarter revenues of $110,447, the best ever quarter in corporate history and an increase of 27% over the $87,183 recorded in the second quarter, fiscal year 2009.

Study finds safety and quality problems in hospitals throughout 13 countries

In one of the largest studies of its kind, a consortium of investigators from 13 countries led the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing in the U.S. and the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium in Europe, found that nurses who reported better working conditions in hospitals and less likelihood of leaving also had patients who were more satisfied with their hospital stay and rated their hospitals more highly.

Fear of the fat promoted to curb obesity

The Australian Medical Association has recommended the use of graphic television advertisements in Victoria to warn people about the risks of eating fatty foods. Rising rates of obesity has prompted these extreme measures. The proposed ads in television and newspaper would cost $25 million and would show the effects of fat on the body's internal organs. The AMA's proposals are part of a submission calling for $63 million to fight obesity.
