Study finds anti-gout medication may reduce risk of colorectal cancer

Allopurinol, a relatively inexpensive anti-gout medication that has been on the market for more than 20 years, may have some activity against colorectal adenomas, according to data presented at the Ninth Annual AACR Frontiers in Cancer Prevention Research Conference, held here Nov. 7-10, 2010.

Changes in chromatin structure may promote cancer

Cancer development is a complex process involving both genetic and epigenetic changes. Genetic changes in oncogenes and tumor-suppressor genes are generally considered as primary causes, since these genes may directly regulate cellular growth. In addition, it has been found that changes in epigenetic factors, through mutation or altered gene expression, may contribute to cancer development.

Top-line results from Teva-Alcobra MG01CI Phase II trial for ADHD

Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. and Alcobra Ltd. announced today top-line results from a six week, randomized, placebo-controlled, Phase II multi-center study designed to assess the safety and efficacy of MG01CI in adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

The main culprit in the meningitis outbreak

"The Centers for Disease Control have identified the culprits from a handful of fungal meningitis cases, and most often they've found a fungus called Exserohilum. This is a genus of molds. Its 19 species usually cause leaf diseases of grasses, including crops like corn and millet, and are not a danger to people or animals. But a few Exserohilum species can also infect us, though they do so very rarely.
