European researchers define research priorities in biogerontology

This is why 50 European researchers, met on May 17 - 19 in Brussels, to define the research priorities in the field of biogerontology for the next 10 to 15 years.

Burnham as a comprehensive center in a new National Cancer Institute (NCI) Chemical Biology Consortium

The consortium will establish a new paradigm in the use of public-private partnerships to translate knowledge from leading academic institutions into new drug treatments for patients with cancer. Both the La Jolla, Calif. campus of Burnham and its new Lake Nona campus in Orlando, Fla. will participate in the consortium.

Study finds link between citrus fruit consumption and melanoma risk

A new analysis of two long-term studies has revealed a potential association between malignant melanoma risk and frequent consumption of grapefruit and oranges. The study found that compared with people who consumed these fruits less than twice a week, those who had them at least 1.6 times a day were at a 36% higher risk of developing melanoma.

Immunomedics reports results of milatuzumab-based combination treatments for NHL patients

Immunomedics, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company primarily focused on the development of monoclonal antibody-based products for the targeted treatment of cancer, autoimmune and other serious diseases, today reported that combination treatment with milatuzumab, the first humanized anti-CD74 antibody in clinical testing, and veltuzumab, a second-generation humanized anti-CD20 antibody, resulted in therapeutic responses in heavily pretreated and rituximab-refractory non-Hodgkin's lymphoma patients.

Smell loss linked to worse nutritional status in patients with chronic kidney disease

A new study indicates that many patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) have some degree of smell loss, and that impairments in patients' ability to smell are linked with worse nutritional status.
