Physicians and researchers now have access to a noninvasive fingertip test that can identify patients with the earliest stages of cardiovascular disease and replace testing that is done during angiography.

Merck, Cardiome Pharma show superiority of BRINAVESS to amiodarone injection

In a new Phase III study, BRINAVESSTM (vernakalant) intravenous, an investigational compound being developed in the European Union by Merck (known as MSD outside the USA and Canada) and Cardiome Pharma Corp. to treat atrial fibrillation, showed that BRINAVESS was superior to amiodarone injection, in converting patients' heart rate from atrial fibrillation (AF) to sinus rhythm (SR) within 90 minutes of the start of administration.

Drugmakers' business practices draw scrutiny

Three top California Medicaid officials in charge of pharmacy issues failed to disclose trips paid for by drug-industry funded business groups, California Watch/San Francisco Chronicle reports. Officials who are directly involved in setting drug policy and negotiating payments took about 12 trips paid for by these nonprofit business groups. The nonprofits hold conferences such as the those attended by the Medicaid officials and raise their money through fees from drug representatives who attend conferences, too.
