Florida stands 41st on maternal mortality ranking with 13.1 deaths per 100,000 live births

In releasing a new report on maternal health nationwide, Amnesty International today revealed that flaws and shocking disparities in maternal health care that the government is ignoring lead to two to three women dying daily in the United States from pregnancy-related complications, with half of these deaths believed preventable, according to the Centers for Disease Control. A state-by-state examination shows that Florida is 41st on a maternal mortality ranking, with 13.1 deaths per 100,000 live births.

AOAC Research Institute certifies Idaho's E.coli O157:H7 test

Idaho Technology, Inc. (ITI) has been granted Performance Tested Methods Status by the AOAC Research Institute (Certificate No. 100901) for its E.coli O157:H7 test used with the R.A.P.I.D.® LT Food Security System (FSS). The assay uses real-time PCR technology to identify the presence of E.coli O157:H7 in raw ground beef and uncooked spinach food samples.

Malaria drug may help those with hereditary hearing loss finds study

Researchers have found that anti-malarial drug artemisinin could help patients with genetic or hereditary hearing loss. The study results were published in the latest issue of the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). The study was titled, "Unconventional secretory pathway activation restores hair cell mechanotransduction in an USH3A model."
