Experts to share insights on the integration of science, psychotherapy and spirituality

Neuroscience is the new buzzword in the world of psychotherapy, yet distinguishing between true innovation and mere speculation can be difficult. In a new program at the 2014 iaedp Symposium in St. Petersburg, Florida (February 26-March 2), keynote speakers, Carolyn Costin, MFt, MA, MEd, CEDS and Joan Borysenko, PhD, will share their insights on the integration of science, psychotherapy and spirituality.

Although there has been progress in recent years, blacks in south Florida are more than three times as likely to be HIV-positive than whites in the region, according to a report from the Florida Department of Health, the Miami Herald reports (Goldstein, Miami Herald, 9/7).

Halting the development of certain pancreatic, ovarian, colon and lung cancers may be possible with new therapy

By investigating a single molecule that influences cell growth, a research group in the Purdue Cancer Center, including Brian S. Henriksen, has gained new insight into the chain of events that make some cancer cells divide uncontrollably, insight that may eventually lead to a way to break that chain, stopping cancer in its tracks. The molecule, known as Icmt, has a critical role in the development of Ras, an ordinarily beneficial protein that tells a cell to divide. The research group has determined how to inhibit Icmt's influence on Ras, without which the protein cannot develop effectively into an instigator of cell growth.
