Virginia Commonwealth University researchers have found that an inflammatory mechanism known as inflammasome may lead to more damage in the heart following injury such as a heart attack, pointing researchers toward developing more targeted strategies to block the inflammatory mechanisms involved.
Applied Biosystems, part of Life Technologies Corporation, today announced a new generation of forensic DNA kits with chemistry reagents designed to address the increasing challenges facing 21st century forensic laboratories.
A new study designed to look at how well patients with high blood pressure and dyslipidemia (high cholesterol levels) coped with their medication, has discovered that within six months many patients fail to take blood pressure or cholesterol medication properly.
Bisphosphonate treatments, proven to enhance bone density and reduce fracture incidence in post-menopausal women, may adversely affect bone quality and increase risk of atypical fractures of the femur when used for four or more years, according to preliminary research presented today at the 2010 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
A team of cardiologists, materials scientists, and bioengineers have created and tested a new type of implantable device for measuring the heart's electrical output that they say is a vast improvement over current devices. The new device represents the first use of flexible silicon technology for a medical application.
