The Miami Herald: "The behemoth Medicare bureaucracy will have to act more like a credit card company in flagging suspicious bills under a new federal law that could save taxpayers billions of dollars a year in wasteful government healthcare spending.
The Global Fund To Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria on Thursday announced "it is to launch a wide-ranging review of its procedures following concern over mismanagement of funds by countries receiving its money," the Financial Times reports. The U.N.-backed organization "which channels $3bn a year in donor funds to developing countries, will restructure its auditing procedures and appoint outside officials to review its systems," according to the news service.
Certain eye conditions appear to put patients at greater risk for having a failed cornea transplant, according the Cornea Donor Study (CDS), a multi-center clinical trial conducted by the National Eye Institute. The study concludes that patients with glaucoma and patients who had corneal swelling following an earlier cataract surgery were more likely to experience failure of the cornea transplant than were other patients in the study.
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the major cause of death among middle-aged adults around the world; however, in high-income countries deaths from cancer have become twice as frequent as those from CVD.
