A Penn Medicine-developed drug has received orphan status from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) this month for the treatment of paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH), a rare, life-threatening disease that causes anemia due to destruction of red blood cells and thrombosis.
Assured Pharmacy, a leading specialty pharmacy group providing prescription medications to sufferers of chronic pain, announced net sales of $4,169,807 for the quarter ended June 30, 2011, an increase of $211,229 or 5.3%, from $3,958,578 for the second quarter of 2010.
Phenytoin is a well known antiepileptic agent widely used throughout the world. Recent clinical studies in patients with bipolar disorder have suggested that, as for other anticonvulsant drugs commonly used in the treatment of bipolar patients including valproate and carbamazepine, phenytoin may have mood-stabilizing effects in addition to its well-known anticonvulsant properties.
Dr. Christine K. Cassel, president and CEO of the ABIM claims to be looking at the big picture. "The campaign is not about rationing or withholding proper care. On the contrary; if waste is not reduced, there will be less money for the care that is necessary," she said. "If we don't as a community collectively address this cost issue, then there's a whole lot of people that aren't going to get the care that they need."
