With backyard, beach and barbeque season upon us and the season's first heat wave right around the corner, a family physician at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-School of Osteopathic Medicine (UMDNJ-SOM) is reminding everyone to "Go SLoW" to enjoy a healthy summer season.
Latest findings showed that for the first time "normal" beat out "overweight." The survey however found that 61.6% of Americans were in the categories of either "overweight" or "obese". The survey found 35.8 percent of Americans to be overweight, compared with 36.0 percent a year ago, and 25.8 percent obese, down from 26.6 percent last year.
A drug called nevirapine has been shown to be effective in reducing the risk of transmission of HIV at birth, but combination therapy of nevirapine and zidovudine does not improve outcomes, according to a study published in the current HIV/AIDS Journal of the American Medical Association.
Researchers at Texas A&M University have successfully "knocked down" the expression of possible disease-causing genes in a cloned goat fetus, perhaps paving the way for breeding disease resistance in other animals, even those genes that might cause bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), commonly known as Mad Cow Disease.
It is known that unprotected sexual intercourse is the most common cause of HIV infection and finding ways to prevent unsafe sex is a major goal of public health efforts to prevent HIV/AIDS. It has not been clear whether unsafe sex associated with alcohol use actually led to HIV infection, or whether certain personality traits, such as sensation-seeking or risky behavior, led to both alcohol use and unsafe sex.
