Rep. Fred Upton (R-Mich.), chairman-in-waiting of the powerful Energy and Commerce Committee, announced on Thursday the chairmen and vice-chairmen on his committee. As predicted, abortion-rights foe Rep. Joe Pitts (R-Pa.) got the chairmanship of the health subcommittee in a sop to conservatives who bitterly opposed Upton because he has not supported efforts to enact parental notification laws, to defund embryonic stem cell research or oppose "partial-birth" abortion.
OXiGENE, Inc., a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company developing novel therapeutics to treat cancer and eye diseases, today announced that it has received a letter from NASDAQ Global Market exchange confirming that, with the appointment of Tamar Howson to the Company's audit committee, as detailed in the Company's Form 8-K filed on April 5, 2010, NASDAQ staff has determined that the Company complies with Listing Rule 5605(c)(2)
A study led by researchers from the Nephrology group at Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBELL) and the University Hospital of Bellvitge (HUB), compared the results of surgery with drug therapy in patients with tertiary hyperparathyroidism, ie after a kidney transplant.
It is perhaps impossible to overstate the importance of the tumor suppressor gene p53. It is the single most frequently mutated gene in human tumors. p53 keeps pre-cancerous cells in check by causing cells, among other things, to become senescent - aging at the cellular level. Loss of p53 causes cells to ignore the cellular signals that would normally make mutant or damaged cells die or stop growing.
