CuraGen Corporation has announced that new preclinical data on belinostat (PXD101), a histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitor being investigated for the treatment of cancer, and velafermin, a protein being investigated for the prevention of severe oral mucositis, will be presented at the upcoming American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) 2007 Annual Meeting in Los Angeles, CA, April 14-18, 2007.
Financial rewards for damages caused by mental injury at work have increased over the past five years by as much as 700%, according to a report released today by the Mental Health Commission of Canada (MHCC). The report warns that a perfect legal storm is brewing in the area of mental health protection at work, and points to emerging responsibilities for employers to provide a psychologically safe workplace. This is timely, since October is Canada's Healthy Workplace Month and next week is Mental Illness Awareness Week.
In a post marking World Humanitarian Day (observed August 19) in the Guardian's "Comment is Free" blog, Kristalina Georgieva, the European Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response, writes, "It is a day to pay tribute to all humanitarian personnel who have lost their lives in the line of duty and to all those who continue to take risks to relieve the suffering of the less fortunate."
Three-quarters of older adults with a serious illness visit the emergency department during the last six months of their lives. Many will be admitted to the hospital. Some will never leave. But only a minority of patients have a conversation with their physician about preferences for end-of-life care before it is too late in their disease course for their wishes to be expressed.
