My doctors estimated that I had an 87 percent risk of breast cancer and a 50 percent risk of ovarian cancer, although the risk is different in the case of each woman. Only a fraction of breast cancers result from an inherited gene mutation. Those with a defect in BRCA1 have a 65 percent risk of getting it, on average. Once I knew that this was my reality, I decided to be proactive and to minimize the risk as much I could. I made a decision to have a preventive double mastectomy. I started with the breasts, as my risk of breast cancer is higher than my risk of ovarian cancer, and the surgery is more complex (Angelina Jolie, 5/14).
"More and more physicians are realizing that prescriptions that leave the office are like money walking out of the door," said Fred Ganjian, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Bryant Ranch Prepack, a leading supplier of prepackaged physician-dispensed prescription programs. "In this day of continuing pressure on physicians to cover their costs, physician-dispensed prescriptions have become increasingly important to a physician's bottom line," he added.
One change to field triage guidelines for emergency medical services responding to older adults with head trauma could make a "clinically important improvement over usual care," according to a study and accompanying editorial published earlier this month in Annals of Emergency Medicine ("Out-of-Hospital Triage of Older Adults With Head Injury: A Retrospective Study of the Effect of Adding 'Anticoagulation or Antiplatelet Medication Use' as a Criterion" and "Can an Out-of-Hospital Medication History Save Lives for Injured Older Adults?").
Scientists at the University of California, San Diego have developed a new method for making scaffolds for culturing tissue in three-dimensional arrangements that mimic those in the body. This advance, published online in the journal Advanced Materials, allows the production of tissue culture scaffolds containing multiple structurally and chemically distinct layers using common laboratory reagents and materials.
Neogenix Oncology announced today that the company has filed a patent application with the U.S. Patent and Trade Office (USPTO) for the 16C3 antigen. The Company believes that this antigen is tumor specific for pancreatic and colorectal tumors; and, based on preliminary clinical data, may also have diagnostic utility as a biomarker for these cancers.
