Understanding the science of how the human gut functions and the role that diet plays in human health will be explored at a major International Functional Foods conference in Cork, this week. Foods have an enormous role to play in keeping people healthy and many foods have properties that can enhance the health of those that consume them.
The National Cancer Institute (NCI) estimates that as many as one in 51 men and women will be diagnosed with melanoma-the deadliest form of skin cancer-at some point during their lifetimes. A research team led by Ze'ev Ronai, Ph.D. at Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute (Sanford-Burnham) is working to unravel the molecular mechanisms underlying the development and progression of this disease in hopes of improving prevention and treatment strategies
"We've shown that you can get the same reduction in coronary artery atherosclerosis with standard-dose or low-dose estrogen," said Thomas B. Clarkson, D.V.M., one of the investigators. "It is very significant."
Researchers have created a new type of biosensor that can detect minute concentrations of glucose in saliva, tears and urine and might be manufactured at low cost because it does not require many processing steps to produce.
