In support of Rare Disease Day 2010, set for February 28, Lundbeck Inc. today launched the Raise Your Hand to Fight Rare Diseases campaign. The web-based initiative is designed to generate support for people with rare diseases and is being conducted in partnership with the National Organization for Rare Disorders (NORD), the sponsor of Rare Disease Day in the United States.
At the opening ceremony of World Water Week in Stockholm, Sweden, on Monday, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) "launched a framework that will help combat food insecurity by providing methods to better manage water resources in agriculture and reduce waste," the U.N. News Centre reports.
For the first time, a research team, led by a UC San Francisco biologist, has isolated energy-burning "beige" fat from adult humans, which is known to be able to convert unhealthy white fat into healthy brown fat. The scientists also found new genetic markers of this beige fat.
The gene p53 has been described as the "guardian of the genome" due to its prominent role in preventing genetic mutations. More than half of all cancers are thought to originate from p53 mutations or loss of function, and now a recent study by VCU Massey Cancer Center scientist Richard Moran, Ph.D., explains why.
