Researchers from the University of Zurich and the University Hospital Zurich reveal possible new treatment methods for a rare, usually fatal brain disease. Thanks to their discovery that specific antibodies play a key role in combating the viral infection, a vaccine against the disease "progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy" could now be developed.
A case report titled, "Acute Solar Retinopathy Imaged With Adaptive Optics, Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography, and En Face Optical Coherence Tomography", appeared in the journal JAMA Ophthalmology, where the authors describe the damage caused by the sun's rays to the eyes of a woman who viewed the recent solar eclipse without adequate eye protection. This type of eye damage is termed acute solar retinopathy.
Independent investigators reported today that patients with paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria who were treated long-term with Soliris (eculizumab) achieved survival comparable to that of an age- and gender-matched normal population.
