Scientists find two proteins that regulates water retention in salt-sensitive hypertension

Research conducted by scientists at LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans has found that two proteins in the brain act as valves to turn the hormone that regulates water retention in the body on and off. Their findings may lead to advances in treatment for diseases like high blood pressure, congestive heart failure, and cirrhosis of the liver. The research is published in the November 1, 2010 issue of Endocrinology.

Tamoxifen reduces the risk of invasive and noninvasive breast cancer

Data from additional years of follow-up of a large randomized placebo-controlled clinical trial of tamoxifen for the prevention of breast cancer confirm that the drug reduces the risk of invasive and noninvasive breast cancer, according to a report that appears in the current issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

Anadys Pharmaceuticals to raise $12.5 million through registered direct offering

Anadys Pharmaceuticals, Inc. announced today that it has entered into definitive agreements with certain institutional investors to raise approximately $12.5 million in gross proceeds in a "registered direct" offering through the sale of a total of 5,813,954 shares of its common stock at an offering price of $2.15 per share. Anadys estimates that net proceeds from the offering will be approximately $11.3 million, after deducting placement agents' fees and estimated offering expenses.

ACT's hESC-derived RPE cells receive EMA positive opinion for Orphan Drug Designation for Stargardt's disease

Advanced Cell Technology, Inc., a leader in the field of regenerative medicine, announced today that the Committee for Orphan Medicinal Products (COMP) of the European Medicines Agency (EMA) has announced a positive opinion of ACT's human embryonic stem cell (hESC)-derived retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells for designation as an orphan medicinal product for the treatment of Stargardt's disease.
