Deepwater Horizon Oil spill has affected mental and physical health of children

On April 20, 2010, an explosion on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig triggered what would become the largest marine oil spill in history. Alexion begins eculizumab clinical trial in Shiga-toxin producing E. coli hemolytic uremic syndrome

Alexion Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and Alexion Pharma International Sàrl (APIS), announced today that the Paul-Ehrlich-Institut, Germany's healthcare regulatory body for biological products, has authorized initiation of an open-label clinical trial to investigate eculizumab as a treatment for patients with Shiga-toxin producing E. coli hemolytic uremic syndrome, which has resulted from infections by Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli in an unusually wide outbreak in Germany that began in May.

New 3D scaffolding technology may help grow skin and blood vessels in labs

Scientists are developing new scaffolding technology which could be used to grow tissues such as skin, nerves and cartilage using 3D spaghetti-like structures. Their research is highlighted in the latest issue of Business, the quarterly highlights magazine of the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC).
