Oh, to be a fly on the wall at this meeting: Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson, in his tour yesterday (June 8, 2004) of National Institutes of Health (NIH) headquarters, heard about the NIH's prime example of taxpayer-funded translational research - development of a new kind of hearing aid that was inspired by basic biological studies of a tiny fly's ear.

South Dakota earns 'B' grade for smokefree air from American Lung Association

Last year, the American Lung Association's annual State of Tobacco Control Report gave the state a rare "I" or incomplete grade for smokefree air, as voters had not yet approved Referred Law 12, the statewide smoking ban. This year, South Dakota earned a "B" grade for smokefree air and a special "thumbs up" to voters who overwhelmingly voted in favor of the ban during the November 2010 election.

Researchers discover easy-to-use method for bonding gels and biological tissues

Researchers have discovered an efficient and easy-to-use method for bonding together gels and biological tissues. A team headed by Ludwik Leibler, involving researchers from the Laboratoire Matière Molle et Chimie (CNRS/ESPCI ParisTech) and the Laboratoire Physico-Chimie des Polymères et Milieux Dispersés (CNRS/ UPMC/ESPCI ParisTech), has succeeded in obtaining very strong adhesion between two gels by spreading on their surface a solution containing nanoparticles.
