Neways, Mali Rising Foundation complete new school for Malian children

The Neways Academy, a school that will enable hundreds of Malian children to enjoy access to secondary education, is officially completed. Neways partnered with Mali Rising Foundation, a Utah-based nonprofit, to construct the school in Touban, a rural village in Mali, West Africa. The school was recently dedicated with a large celebration to commemorate the completion.

Scientists report advancement in smartphone-based imaging to detect viruses in remote locations

Scientists are reporting an advance in smartphone-based imaging that could help physicians in far-flung and resource-limited locations monitor how well treatments for infections are working by detecting, for the first time, individual viruses. Their study on the light-weight device, which converts the phone into a powerful mini-microscope, appears in the journal ACS Nano.

Amyloid protein content in the brain linked to Alzheimer's disease risk

Researchers from the Flanders Interuniversity Institute for Biotechnology (VIB) connected to the University of Antwerp are the first to show that the quantity of amyloid protein in brain cells is a major risk factor for Alzheimer's disease. Amyloid protein has already been known to be the primary component of the senile plaques in the brains of patients. The new discovery demonstrates that the greater the quantity of the protein that is produced, the younger the dementia patient is.
