In a perspective published in Neuropsychopharmacology, leaders from the National Institutes of Health address how using appropriate language to describe mental illness and addiction can help to reduce stigma and improve how people with these conditions are treated in health care settings and throughout society.

Researchers identify how neural cells build up resistance to opioid pain drugs within hours

Researchers at the University of Montreal's Sainte-Justine Hospital have identified how neural cells are able to build up resistance to opioid pain drugs within hours. "A better understanding of these mechanisms will enable us to design drugs that avoid body resistance to these drugs and produce longer therapeutic responses, including prolonged opioid analgesia", lead author Dr. Graciela Pineyro said.

TissueGene commences enrollment in TG-C Phase II trial for severe knee osteoarthritis

TissueGene, Inc. announced today that it has initiated patient enrollment for a U.S. Phase II clinical trial of its lead product candidate TG-C. TG-C involves human allogeneic chondrocytes developed to produce the therapeutic protein TGF-beta1 for the regeneration of cartilage in patients suffering from severe osteoarthritis of the knee.

President Obama's largest legislative accomplishment to date was the passage of the health care reform law, which has been going into effect in stages, with regulations currently being written for the most substantial changes due to take effect in 2014. So it is odd the President mentioned health care only briefly, and in passing, in his State of the Union address last night.
