Nurse-driven program receives grant to improve care for older adults in nursing homes

The Washington Department of Social and Health Services has awarded Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders, a nurse-driven program based at NYU Rory Meyers College of Nursing, a grant of more than $644,000 to improve the quality of care for older adults living in nursing homes in Washington State.

Hepatitis C treatment less effective in urban minority patients

A recent study confirms that the standard hepatitis C (HCV) therapy, pegylated interferon and ribavirin, is significantly less effective in urban minority patients treated in an ordinary clinical practice setting compared with results produced during clinical trials. Results of this study appear in the April issue of Hepatology, a journal published by Wiley-Blackwell on behalf of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases.

Four Senate Democrats are asking Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., to revisit a plan for a government run health plan, or public option, in the health care overhaul legislation.

The money will go to expanding primary care services, as well as helping health centers stay open longer and provide expanded services not always available at the clinics across the United States.
