MedImmune initiates MEDI8897 phase I clinical studies for treatment of RSV infections

AIMM Therapeutics, a leading human therapeutic antibody company, today announced that its partner MedImmune, LLC, the global biologics unit of AstraZeneca, has initiated phase I clinical studies with MEDI8897, a best-in-class antibody for the treatment of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infections in young, at risk children.

Oregon Insurance Commissioner tapped to advise HHS on health exchanges

Oregon's top insurance regulator is joining the Health and Human Services Department to help implement insurance exchanges. Oregon Insurance Administrator Teresa Miller will start at HHS next month, according to a department email. She'll be a senior adviser on exchanges, working with state governments to get the new insurance marketplaces off the ground.

Neighbors were already concerned about the growing number of group homes for the elderly and recovering addicts in the area, many of them for profit. A Times analysis found 24 licensed facilities offering residential care for the elderly within a mile of the proposed project and three more waiting for state approval. It is one of several such clusters that have emerged in Los Angeles County - including parts of the San Fernando Valley and South Bay - where families can afford fees that run into thousands of dollars per month. Large swaths of the county's less affluent areas have no such facilities.

Stem cell research issues fought out in the court

A US district court has issued a temporary injunction stopping President Obama's plans to increase funding for human embryonic stem cell research. The US government will appeal. According to a Justice Department spokesman, they are likely to file a case this week.
