Researchers have discovered that stabilizing dysfunctional endothelial cells with approved drugs reverses cellular dysfunction in a rat model of cerebral small vessel disease, hinting towards a new therapeutic approach for the treatment of vascular dementia.

Chinese scientists present study on oxycholesterol's cholesterol-boosting effects at 238th ACS meeting

Health-conscious people know that high levels of total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol (the so-called "bad" cholesterol) can increase the risk of heart attacks. Now scientists are reporting that another form of cholesterol called oxycholesterol - virtually unknown to the public - may be the most serious cardiovascular health threat of all. Scientists from China presented one of the first studies on the cholesterol-boosting effects of oxycholesterol here today at the 238th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society. The researchers hope their findings raise public awareness about oxycholesterol, including foods with the highest levels of the substance and other foods that can combat oxycholesterol's effects.

Merck to hold conference call on its third-quarter 2009 results with institutional investors and analysts

Merck & Co., Inc. will hold its third-quarter 2009 sales and earnings conference call with institutional investors and analysts beginning at 9:00 a.m. EDT on Thursday, Oct. 22. During the call, Richard T. Clark, chairman, president and chief executive officer, Peter N. Kellogg, executive vice president and chief financial officer, and Kenneth C. Frazier, executive vice president and president, Global Human Health, will provide an overview of Merck's financial performance for the quarter.

FDA approves continuation of Phase IIb clinical trial for superficial bladder cancer

Tikcro Technologies Ltd. today announced that BioCancell Therapeutics, Inc., concluded the first 18 patient group treated pursuant to a Phase IIb clinical trial of the drug candidate BC-819 for use in superficial bladder cancer. These patients had not responded to conventional treatment.

Invacare sells ISG medical supplies business to AssuraMed

Invacare Corporation announced today that it has completed the sale of its Invacare Supply Group (ISG) medical supplies business to AssuraMed of Twinsburg, Ohio, a leader in wholesale and home-delivered medical supplies across the United States, for a purchase price of approximately $150.8 million in cash, which is subject to final post-closing adjustments.
