Breastfeeding may increase hay fever and eczema risk, but does not have clear effect on asthma

The effect of breastfeeding on the risk of developing asthma and allergy has been debated for a long time. In a recent study, Uppsala University researchers show that breastfeeding might in fact increase the risk of developing hay fever and eczema, while not having any clear effect on the risk of asthma.

Novartis to pay additional $250 million for gender discrimination inflicted on 5,600 working women

After delivering a unanimous verdict against Novartis on all counts and awarding 12 former Novartis sales reps $3.36 million in compensatory damages yesterday, a New York jury today delivered a stronger dose of the same medicine. Announcing the amount of punitive damages to be awarded, the jury determined that Novartis must pay an additional $250 million for the gender discrimination it inflicted on 5,600 working women in the class. The case was the largest gender discrimination matter ever to go to verdict in the U.S.

HSA Bank reports 7.6% increase in average balance carried into 2010

HSA Bank reported today that the average Health Savings Account (HSA) balance carried into 2010 grew by 7.6 percent over the balance carried into 2009. The average balance of these accounts grew even though the nation faced the uncertainty of a recovering global economy, ailing retirement accounts, unemployment and healthcare reform.
