Psychological factors are major predictors of chronic pain in trauma patients, say researchers

Can long-term pain and disability be predicted in individuals recovering from non-life-threatening orthopedic injuries? A team of Australian researchers writing in The Journal of Pain, the peer review journal of the American Pain Society, www.ampainsoc.org, says yes and believes psychological factors, such as pessimism about recovery and depression, are major predictors of chronic pain in trauma patients.

Oral contraceptives equally effective for obese women

The first study to compare the effectiveness of the birth control pill in women with marked weight differences has found that the pill works equally well in women with obesity and thinner women. This new finding by physician-scientists at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center refutes a long-held conviction among many doctors that the pill may not reliably prevent pregnancy in women who are overweight or obese.

Women with schizophrenia twice as likely to experience pre-term birth and pregnancy complications

Women with schizophrenia are nearly twice as likely to experience pre-eclampsia, pre-term birth and other serious pregnancy and delivery complications as women without the condition, a landmark study by researchers at the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES) and Women's College Hospital has found.
