The Patient Safety Movement Foundation supports two federal laws aimed to improve the safety of mothers in hospitals across the United States.

A third of chronically ill adults don't tell their clinicians that they underuse medications due to cost

About one-third of chronically ill adults who underuse medications because of the costs associated with buying the drugs, never tell their health care practitioners, according to an article in the September 13 issue of The Archives of Internal Medicine, one of the JAMA/Archives journals.

House, Senate lawmakers race to find compromise, but differ on key issues

"Facing an electorate more worried about jobs and the economy than healthcare, House and Senate Democrats have stepped up efforts to get a compromise bill to President Obama by the end of the month," the Los Angeles Times reports. Rep. Marcy Kaptur, D-Ohio, summarized the message she gleaned from holiday meetings with local voters: "Get it over with." Political fatigue has set the stage for a push by Democrats to send a bill to Obama by the month's end, which means resolving a list of thorny issues. Industry and interest groups - despite Democrats' race with the clock - are also stepping up last-minute lobbying efforts (Levey and Hook, 1/13).

Xenotransplantation – organ transplants from animals may soon be a reality

Researchers have been able to create genetically modified piglets that are cleaned of the viruses that could causes diseases in humans. This could open up new avenues in organs transplants from pigs to humans. The process of transplanting organs or tissues from animals to humans is called xenotransplantation. The report was published this Tuesday in the journal Science.
