For Black women in the southern United States, mistrust of the health care system that is grounded in structural and systemic racism is a key factor affecting participation in HIV prevention and treatment services, reports a study in the September/October issue of The Journal of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care (JANAC). The official journal of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care, JANAC is published in the Lippincott portfolio by Wolters Kluwer.
Dr. Olivier Collignon of the University of Montreal's Saint-Justine Hospital Research Centre compared the brain activity of people who can see and people who were born blind, and discovered that the part of the brain that normally works with our eyes to process vision and space perception can actually rewire itself to process sound information instead.
Cellular Dynamics International (CDI) and Promega have entered into a research collaboration with the goal of bringing more relevant and highly predictive toxicity testing to the drug discovery process. Pharmaceutical discovery scientists will now be able to combine bioassays with human cardiomyocytes to improve prediction of unintentional, detrimental side effects that have previously remained undetected until late in the development process or after release of the drug to the general public.
Poland Spring Water Company joined first responders and firefighters from Franklin County yesterday for the inaugural emergency training and helicopter landing at the recently constructed Kingfield helipad. Poland Spring donated $6,500 to the Fireman's Association of Franklin County and helped secure Tax Increment Financing (TIF) money to build and pave the helipad, now located behind the Kingfield Fire Station.
An international study headed by a UC Davis scientist describes how a component of a potential HIV vaccine opens like a flower, undergoing one of the most dramatic protein rearrangements yet observed in nature. The finding could reveal new targets for vaccines to prevent HIV infection and AIDS. A paper describing the work was published online this week in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
