On October 24, 2019, cystic fibrosis (CF) patients rejoiced at the news that three years of talks between the UK's National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and Vertex Pharmaceuticals had succeeded in a compromise which could see about 5,000 patients gaining access to a potentially life-saving drug called Orkambi within the next month. Orkambi is perceived to be a ‘wonder drug' because it helps these patients to breathe easier and better, and can be started as young as two years.
In the second post in a series titled "Imagine a World...," posted on the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation's "Impatient Optimists" blog, Faustina Fynn-Nyame, director of Marie Stopes International in Ghana, discusses reproductive health in Ghana, writing, "For some women here, choices about reproductive health are something they take for granted," but "other women in Ghana - indeed most - are not able to do this."
Decisions, decisions, decisions. Wouldn't it be nice to have a computer program that could help you make work-related decisions? That's exactly what Drs. Faye Anderson, Karen Frith, Fan Tseng, Mikel Petty and Gregory Reed have done.
When Massachusetts passed its landmark health coverage law under Gov. Mitt Romney in 2006, no one claimed the state would get to zero, as in 0 percent of residents who are uninsured. But numbers out today suggest Massachusetts is very close. Between December 2013 and March of this year, when the federal government was urging people to enroll, the number of Massachusetts residents signed up for health coverage increased by more than 215,000. If that number holds, the percentage of Massachusetts residents who do not have coverage has dropped to less than 1 percent (Bebinger, 6/9).
The immune system of a pregnant woman is altered during pregnancy, but not in the way previously believed, according to results from a study at Linköping University, Sweden.
