Researchers develop systems to detect an atypical fungus responsible for severe pneumonia

The group led by Dr. Enrique J. Calderón - "Clinical Epidemiology and Vascular Risk" at the Institute of Biomedicine of Seville - IBiS/University Hospitals Virgen del Rocío and Macarena/CSIC/University of Seville, also a member of CIBERESP, participated in a project with researchers from CIBER-BBN, in which they developed systems to detect Pneumocystis jirovecii, an atypical fungus responsible for very severe pneumonia in immunosuppressed patients.

New risk index for COPD developed to estimate the risk of death

Researchers from the Centre for Research in Environmental Epidemiology (CREAL) and the Municipal Institute of Medical Research (IMIM-Hospital del Mar), in collaboration with the Hospital Clínic of Barcelona, have participated in an international consortium that has developed a new risk index for COPD patients. With this index, doctors can assess disease severity more objectively and estimate the risk of death.

Scientists in the U.S. say a significant number of premature births may be caused by infections which are undiagnosed and the heavier the infection, the more likely the women were to deliver younger, sicker babies.
