National HIV Testing Day is June 27, 2010. Like every day in a country where there are 56,000 new HIV infections a year, approximately 150 Americans will learn of their HIV infection on June 27th. So, here's the question - what happens on June 28th, the day after National HIV Testing Day? What do medical providers do with these newly-identified HIV patients?
Vaccinations for flu, tetanus and other common vaccines are increasingly taking place in non-medical settings such as supermarkets and drug stores. This added responsibility for pharmacists increases the risk of needlestick injuries (NSIs), puncture wounds often suffered while preparing or after use of a needle. NSIs can transmit bloodborne pathogens, including hepatitis C and HIV, from an infected patient to the person administering the vaccine.
An international team, led by researchers at the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, has developed a new, timelier method to identify harmful bacteria levels on recreational beaches. The new model provides beach managers with a better prediction tool to identify when closures are required to protect beachgoers from harmful contaminates in the water.
