Researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) have uncovered the genetic identity of a cellular receptor for the immune system's first-response antibody, a discovery that sheds new light on infection control and immune disorders. The discovery is such a crucial part of immunology that UAB researchers, in conjunction with Japanese researchers, are asking that the gene linked to this antibody receptor be renamed to better describe its role in early immune responses.
A report recently released by World Vision has found that girls in developing countries who marry before age 18 - whose numbers are expected to double to 100 million in the next 10 years - are at an increased risk of HIV/AIDS, Reuters reports.
It's well known that women with certain hereditary genetic mutations, particularly BRCA1 and BRCA2, have an increased risk of breast cancer. But in recent years, researchers have discovered a link between some of those same genetic mutations - along with a handful of others - and aggressive prostate cancer.
