Osteoarthritis is a disease of the whole joint, typified by structural alterations in bone, ligaments, and joints, that render them weak. In its severe form, it is extremely debilitating for patients, resulting in hindered mobility and the incidence of severe pain.
A new study reveals that 4 in 10 people who have peanut allergies choose not to consume tree nuts, despite not having allergies to these nuts. The study titled, "Real world tree nut consumption in peanut-allergic individuals," was published in Annals of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology in the latest issue. The journal is the scientific journal of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI).
Scientists have developed an alternative method for producing the active ingredient in Tamiflu-, the mainstay for fighting H1N1 and other forms of influenza. The new process could expand availability of the drug by reducing its cost, which now retails for as about $8 per dose.
The Diabetes Hands Foundation announced today that it will send diabetes advocate Bennet Dunlap to participate on a panel September 9, 2013 aiming to address the growing concerns around blood glucose test strip accuracy.
Nearly everyone who has tried to quit smoking says it's incredibly difficult, and the struggle is due in part to genetic factors. Now, a new study from the Raymond and Ruth Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania sheds light on how one specific genetic risk for smoking relapse may work: Some of the difficulties may be due to how many receptors, called "mu opioid" receptors, a smoker has in his or her brain.
