Mayor Adrian Fenty and top health officials in Washington, D.C., on Monday announced a new initiative aimed at increasing HIV testing in the city, the Washington Post reports. The testing campaign follows a report that found an HIV/AIDS prevalence of 3% in the district.
A study by physicians at Boston Medical Center (BMC), has found that patients with a high degree of activation (possessing the knowledge, skills, confidence and inclination to assume responsibility for managing one's health and health-care needs) were less likely to be readmitted to the hospital within 30 days of discharge than those with a low level of activation.
In a post on USAID's "IMPACTblog," Amanda Makulec of John Snow Inc. describes the Helping Babies Breathe (HBB) initiative, which was developed "to equip birth attendants in developing countries with the skills they need to successfully resuscitate babies born without the ability to breathe on their own."
Primary care physicians agree they have a role in addressing obesity, but say they do not have the right weight management resources. Obese or heavier adults take responsibility for weight loss, but adults who need to lose weight may lack information about effective weight loss methods and strategies. These findings and others come from new research commissioned and released today by the Strategies to Overcome and Prevent (STOP) Obesity Alliance, a project operating out of the Department of Health Policy at The George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services.
