Mona Batish, PhD, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-New Jersey Medical School, is one of 14 scientists nationwide who have received the 2012 National Institutes of Health (NIH) Director's Early Independence Award.
A new study has shown that the food allergies that people claim to have may not be true. The study reveals that as many as 20 percent of Americans over the age of 18 years believe that they are allergic to one or more food items. The study finds that the actual number of people who have a food allergy is close to 10 percent of the population. They also show that one in 20 Americans had a diagnosed case of a food allergy.
The protein SPARC plays a key role in the development of heart muscle in the embryo. An Austrian Science Fund FWF project has discovered this previously unknown role of SPARC.
The Sacramento Bee: An analysis of financial data from 300 California hospitals "shows they collected $25 billion from insurance companies between September 2008 and October 2009 - an increase of more than a third since 2005.
