Response rates to antidepressants differ among English and Spanish speaking Hispanics

In the first-ever study of its kind, a team led by researchers at Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center (LA BioMed) report in November's Psychiatric Services journal that Spanish-speaking Hispanics took longer to respond to medication for depression and were less likely to go into remission than English-speaking Hispanics.

Caliper Life Sciences, Inc., today reported results for its third quarter ended September 30, 2010. Third quarter GAAP revenue decreased 8% to $29.7 million from $32.2 million in the same period in 2009 as a result of divestitures in 2010 and 2009. Revenue from on-going business increased 10% on a reported basis and 11% on an organic basis.

BIST researchers develop new retinal prosthesis to address visual degeneration

A healthy retina contains photoreceptor cells that convert light changes into nerve impulses, which are then carried along the optic nerve to the brain, where they are decoded into images. Diseases such as retinitis pigmentosa cause the photoreceptor cells to stop functioning, while the rest of the eye remains healthy.
