A paper published in the current issue of Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics, as a result of the collaboration of several universities (University of Bologna, The Pennsylvania State University, Wayne State University, University of Pennsylvania) points to the important role that benzodiazepines may have in depression.

Patients are under-informed about treatments; Home-based care gains popularity

A survey of more than 3,000 patients age 40 and older reveals that physicians often leave information out when they present treatment plans to patients, who "hear far more from doctors about the pros than cons of medications, tests and surgeries." Often, "physicians tend to offer opinions, not options, the researchers found, and rarely mention to patients that they can decide not to do anything," according to the study, which was funded by the Foundation for Informed Medical Decision Making.

Occupational chemical exposure raises for Parkinson's

A new research report contributes to the increasing evidence that repeated occupational exposure to certain chemical solvents raises the risk for Parkinson's disease. Researchers analyzed the occupational histories of twins in which one of the pair developed the neurodegenerative disorder, and assessed that twin's likelihood of exposure to six chemicals previously linked to Parkinson's.

Canadian Medical Isotope panel singles out Iotron Industries' technology to address isotope shortage

Iotron Industries announced that their technology was specifically singled out by the expert panel reviewing Canadian medical isotope productions as a superior approach to accelerator based isotope production. The panel has recommended that the Government of Canada make an investment in linear accelerator (linac) technology to address the country's shrinking isotope supply.
