Ontario-wide - Natural disasters like Hurricane Katrina, the Asian tsunami and other catastrophic events have keenly demonstrated the need for emergency preparedness for government, businesses, households and individuals. S.G.R. More than 99 percent of Americans have no idea what these three letters stand for. And yet they are extremely valuable: worth about $140 billion. This week, a House committee will finally take up the issue. The S.G.R., or the Sustainable Growth Rate formula, was enacted as part of the Balanced Budget Act of 1997 to restrain the inevitable increase in Medicare's annual spending on physician services. ... Nice idea in theory. Never worked out in practice (Dr. Ezekiel J. Emanuel and Topher Spiro, 7/29).
A research team led by scientists at the National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), has applied advanced imaging methods and computer simulations to be able to glance at the regulation of a cancer-related gene in a living cell. They found that the efficiency with which the components of the cell's gene reading machinery come together has an impact on gene expression, the process by which a gene translates its information into a new protein. The findings, published in the May 23, 2008 issue of Molecular Cell, shed new light on the means by which living cells regulate gene activity.
The first 3D surgical microscopes from Leica Microsystems with TrueVision 3D technology inside are available to customers. By incorporating the digital smart 3D system inside select models of Leica Microsystems' surgical microscopes, the two companies have eliminated the need for a separate 3D cart.
Iowa recorded 127 new HIV cases in 2007, a 12% increase from the 113 cases reported in 2006 and the highest number since the state began recording HIV/AIDS cases in 1998, according to a recently released Iowa Department of Public Health report, the Cedar Rapids Gazette reports.
