Novel quantitative method may reduce or eliminate need for invasive biopsies

Scientists have identified a quantitative method to measure changes in biomarkers, which may reduce or eliminate the need for invasive biopsies. The method, described in the February 2016 issue of The FASEB Journal uses a novel chimera design of DNA and small DNA with a companion contrast agent to allow antibodies to cross cellular membranes.

Pitting pathogens against each other could prevent drug resistance emerging

Limiting the nutrient resources that pathogens depend on for replication could prevent the emergence of drug resistance, according to research findings. In a study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, scientists have taken advantage of the competition that occurs between host pathogens to achieve successful treatment of infection with existing drugs, even when drug-resistant pathogens were present.

Rats born with low birth weights are more likely to develop age-related vision loss, say researchers

Medical researchers at the University of Alberta recently published their findings that rats with restricted growth in the womb, causing low birth weights when born, were most susceptible to developing age-related vision loss, compared to their normal weight counterparts.
