New statistics show a big increase in the number of cancers detected by breast screening. In 2003/04 over 14% more cancers were detected compared to the previous year with over 11,000 women having breast cancer detected and treated following screening for the disease. Since 2001 the total number of cancers detected through breast screening has risen by nearly a third.

It turns out that the science is rather shaky on when to decide the likelihood of recovery from a coma after the heart stops.
By monitoring blood flow in the brains of six climbers scaling Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, German medical researchers have identified a possible way to prevent the headaches that are a common feature of altitude sickness. This work appears in the latest issue of JNIRS—Journal of Near Infrared Spectroscopy.
A first-of-its-kind study of safety issues surrounding the medical use of cannabis has just been launched. Known as the COMPASS study (Cannabis for the management of pain: assessment of safety study), the research initiative will follow 1400 chronic pain patients, 350 of whom use cannabis as part of their pain management strategy, for a one-year period.
Decreased kidney function is associated with decreased cognitive functioning in areas such as global cognitive ability, abstract reasoning and verbal memory, according to a study led by Temple University. This is the first study describing change in multiple domains of cognitive functioning in order to determine which specific abilities are most affected in individuals with impaired renal function.
