Amedica Corporation, a biomaterial company that develops and commercializes silicon nitride ceramics, today released the results of its CASCADE study, a blinded, randomized clinical trial that compared outcomes of spinal fusion surgery between its composite silicon nitride spacers manufactured with a central core of cancellous structured ceramic (CsC), to the gold standard, i.e., PEEK (polyether ether ketone plastic) spacers filled with bone autograft.

An international team of researchers under the leadership of the LIMES Institute and the excellence cluster ImmunoSensation of the University of Bonn unraveled a new regulatory mechanism how food components and environmental factors influence the immune system.

Scientists have identified a fault in the brain waves of schizophrenics that may explain their hallucinations and disturbed thinking

The researchers studied the brain waves of normal and schizophrenic patients as they responded to images. Those with the disorder showed no electrical activity in a certain frequency-the "gamma" range, from 30 to 100 brain waves per second-that healthy brain cells use to exchange information about the environment and form mental impressions.

Colorado receives "D" on Premature Birth Report Card for the second consecutive year

For the second consecutive year, Colorado received a "D" on the Premature Birth Report Card issued by the March of Dimes. However, the state did show improvement in two key areas that affect prematurity, including the rate of smoking for childbearing-age women.
