The Food and Drug Administration will step up oversight of three forms of medical radiation, including CT scans, in an effort to reduce patients' exposure to unnecessary radiation, The New York Times reports.
Experts from Drexel University are available to comment on a new study on autism prevalence released today by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
An observational study from UCLA's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer comparing robotic-assisted prostate surgery to open surgery for prostate cancer found that patients who had robotic surgery had fewer instances of cancer cells at the edge of the surgical specimen, or fewer positive margins, and less need of additional cancer treatments, such as hormone therapy or radiation, than patients who had open surgery.
Biologists at Heidelberg University have discovered new approaches for the treatment of cancer. They investigated how a special signalling molecule, the epidermal growth factor (EGF), stimulates the separation of chromosomes in the cell. The researchers were able to demonstrate that EGF accelerates the division of the cell nucleus, i.e. mitosis, as well as boosts precision in chromosome segregation.
A study done by investigators at the Boston University Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy (CSTE) and the Veterans Affairs Boston Healthcare System, in collaboration with the Sports Legacy Institute (SLI), describes 68 cases of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) among deceased athletes and military veterans whose brain and spinal cords were donated to the VA CSTE Brain Bank.
