The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation today announced that twelve grantees have advanced to the next level of Grand Challenges Explorations (GCE), an initiative that enables researchers worldwide to test unorthodox ideas that address persistent health and development challenges. The grantees will receive additional funding to continue Phase II of their research over a two-year period.
A ₤16.5 million investment in stem cell research was announced today, 27th May, promising to speed the development of new treatments and cures from the laboratory to the clinic. In total, 57 multidisciplinary research grants have been awarded as part of the new monies allocated via the 2002 Government Spending Review to the UK Research Councils.
ecretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack has launched "a major drive to improve agriculture" in Afghanistan, McClatchy/Miami Herald reports. During an airborne tour of the country's Helmand province on Tuesday, Vilsack delivered the "message: If you grow wheat, vegetables and pomegranates instead of poppies, the United States will help you reap the financial benefits."
Malaria, a disease caused mainly by the parasites Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax, (P. vivax) is associated with over 400,000 deaths each year.
