A group of top international scientists including geneticists from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland has made a breakthrough in understanding human adaptation to high altitude environments.
Vertex Pharmaceuticals (Australia) Pty Ltd., announces the presentation of data from KALYDECO (ivacaftor) studies at the 10th Australasian Cystic Fibrosis Conference in Auckland, New Zealand, August 17 – 20, 2013, which further demonstrate the benefits of the medicine in people with cystic fibrosis ages 6 and older who have at least one copy of the G551D mutation in the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator gene.
Only 10 years ago, deciphering the genetic information from one individual in a matter of weeks to find a certain disease-causing genetic mutation would have been written off as science fiction. It was the time of the Human Genome Project, and it had taken armies of sequencing robots working around the clock for almost a decade to unravel the complete sequence of the human genetic code - referred to as the genome - by churning out the DNA alphabet letter by letter.
Some doctors yell and scream. Some throw surgical instruments. They berate nurses, other health care workers and even patients with snide remarks and insults.
