Researchers at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston have identified women who are likely to gain weight while using depot medroxyprogesterone acetate, more commonly known as Depo-Provera or the birth control shot. These findings dispel the myth that all women who use DMPA will gain weight and will help physicians to counsel patients appropriately.

CNIO researcher-led consortium to receive MRA grant to advance research in melanoma

A consortium led by the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre's researcher Mar-a S. Soengas −Programme Director of the Centre-s Molecular Pathology Programme and Leader of the CNIO Melanoma Group− has been selected to receive funding from the Melanoma Research Alliance, the most important private international melanoma research foundation, in order to advance research in melanoma; this type of skin tumour represents one of oncology's biggest challenges due to its high incidence and malignancy.

Survey on administrating human papillomavirus vaccine for cervical cancer prevention

The vast majority of pediatricians and family physicians nationally are offering the human papillomavirus (also called HPV) vaccine, though fewer physicians are strongly encouraging it for 11- to 12-year-old girls as recommended by national guidelines, according to a survey in the September issue of Pediatrics, the journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Antimicrobial resistance and foodborne diseases pay no heed to national frontiers

The project is funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development to the tune of seven million euros will run for five years and will be implemented in sub-Saharan Africa.
